What is the percentage of lives lost from the collapse of houses during earthquakes?
Housing damage and collapse contribute to about 95% of the fatalities during earthquakes. In general, most of these fatalities occur in developing countries. According to the United Nations, out of the 417,150 people who lost their lives in earthquakes in the period 1991-2005, 397,300 were from developing countries. In that same time period, earthquakes and tsunamis accounted for 64% of the casualities from natural disasters in developing countries. Click here to visit the UN ISDR site for more statistics.
Is vertical reinforcement embedded directly effective in stone masonry constructions with mud-mortar?
Vertical reinforcement can be effective in brick masonry and dressed stone masonry buildings, which have masonry units with regular surfaces. But, in random rubble stone masonry, its effectiveness is very low. In random rubble masonry walls in mud mortar, single reinforcement bars are ineffective when embedded at corners, adjoining the openings, and in between the corners and openings. However, such buildings MUST have horizontal bands, especially the lintel band.
